Amir Khan doubts whether Terence Crawford will be the same presence at 147 lbs

The former 2-weight world champion, Terence Crawford recently decided to relinquish his undisputed world jr-welterweight title to decide to campaign as a welterweight.

After holding the World Boxing Organization’s title in both the lightweight and jr-welterweight weight classes.

They saw fit to instil ‘Bud’ as the mandatory challenger to their version of the world welterweight title.

That title is currently held by Australia’s game and rugged Jeff Horn. He captured that title in the summer of 2017 when he surprised Manny Pacquiao and overwhelmed him physically over 12 rounds.

Delivering his opinion on the consensus number one pound-for-pound fighter in the sport. Khan was wise to tread carefully and pay homage to the Omaha native’s skill set.

“I think he’s a brilliant fighter. He’s got a great boxing style.”

But Khan did share that after moving into his third weight class, there will be questions as to whether he will still be the same presence in the squared circle.

“He’s more of a boxer, but he can fight as well. Has power in both hands, but he’s moved up in weight to 147 [pounds], so I don’t know if he’s going to carry the same power with him,” Khan told Sky Sports.

Additionally, Khan feels that after growing into a man campaigning 12 lbs over where he started his career, the extra weight might take away from what he currently is perceived to be.

“I know he was very strong at 135, then he went to 140, but now at 147 is he really going to carry that weight?

Its very rare that fighters scale the weight divisions and still possess knockout power. There are a few exceptions, of course, Manny Pacquiao, Roberto Duran and James Toney come to mind.

“Not many fighters can do that,” Khan added.

“Manny Pacquiao carried the power when he moved up in weight, but can Terence Crawford do the same thing? He’s got the height and the reach.”
