Amir Khan: I’m at the peak of my career

Amir Khan makes his return to the ring this weekend at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

He will take on Canada’s Phil Lo Greco this weekend in his first fight since 2016. ‘King Khan’ will climb through those ropes for the first time since suffering the RING Magazine knockout of the year for 2016 at the hands of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Khan has endured quite a turbulent period in terms of his personal late in his two years off. He shared that he is very much looking forward to doing what he does best once more.

“I can’t wait to get in the ring and see how I am, as a fighter, after two years,” Khan told Sky Sports News.

The 2004 Olympian shared that he believes despite coming off of three losses in his last seven fights, he believes he is only now reaching the pinnacle of his fighting prowess.

“I think I’m at the peak of my career now. I feel better now than I did when I was 28. I train smarter now. When I was younger I made mistakes – [I was caught with my] hands down.

Khan believes his ability has only been enhanced following his recent losses because he says it has made him a smarter fighter.

Furthermore, Khan also pointed out that he feels Canelo had significant heavy hands that would have been a major factor against any natural welterweight.

Now I’m smarter, I don’t want to be caught with those big shots like the Canelo shot.

Canelo, that night, would have knocked out a lot of welterweight fighters. He’s a very big puncher.”

Khan believes the winner of his upcoming showdown with Lo Greco will rise up the ladder in the welterweight division to world level.

“This fight takes us to the next level, where we want to be. The winner will go to world level,” Khan said.

Lastly, Khan detailed that he still harbours aspirations to become a world champion once more.

“I really think there is a world title still, for me. The division is amazing – there are a lot of big names. There are fighters I think I can beat.”

“I want to go back down to the 147lbs division, win a world title, then move onto other ways of taking big fights.”
