Roy Jones Jr: Lomachenko – Rigondeaux best match-up ever

We have just under two weeks to wait until Guillermo Rigondeaux challenges Vasyl Lomachenko for his WBO super-featherweight world title in Madison Square Garden.

It promises to be a match-up of unprecedented implications, with the bout featuring two of the most decorated amateur fighters of all time.

Both fighters boast thorough amateur pedigree and have amassed close to 400 bouts apiece and both have claimed two Olympic Gold medals apiece.

Lomachenko is heavily favoured going into the bout, given his advantages in the age and size departments.

But Rigondeaux is a puzzle nobody has yet to figure out and Lomachenko hasn’t had much experience of that well-drilled Cuban style of fighting which makes for a very intriguing match-up.

Former 6-time world champion, Roy Jones Jr cast his opinion on the upcoming match-up. It is fair to say he is looking forward to this fight.

“That’s the big one. I can’t wait. I love both fighters. Both are two-time gold medalists;” Jones said.

Breaking down the match-up, Jones says the upcoming bout is arguably the most intriguing match-up he has come across.”That’s the best paper made fight ever. You can’t find two fighters better on paper to put against each other.”

That’s the best fight I ever seen made on paper, and I can’t wait,” Jones told BoxingScene.com.

“And the winner? It all depends on which fighter is capable of carrying out his game plan,” Jones explained.

Breaking down what each fighter needs to do to be successful. Jones shared that ‘El Chacal’ must grab the fight by the scruff of the neck and dictate the tempo.

“Rigondeaux has got to box and break the rhythm of Lomachenko with those big power punches,” Jones added.

Then analysing what his Ukranian counterpart must do, Jones detailed: “Lomachenko has to use that volume punching that he does to keep Rigondeaux off-balance.”

Whoever can carry out the plan will be the winner,” Jones concluded.
