Lomachenko: Fight with Rigondeaux will be historic

On December 9th, boxing history will be made. For the first time ever two, two-time Olympic gold medal winners, Vasyl Lomachenko and Guillermo Rigondeaux will collide inside of a professional boxing ring.

Rigondeaux is making a major move up in weight, rising from the super bantamweight limit of 122lbs to challenge Lomachenko for the WBO 130 lbs title.

The Ukrainian spoke to ESPN about the difficulty of trying to make the fight against Rigondeaux in the past, when campaigning in the featherweight division. “I’ve wanted to make this fight a couple of years ago in another weight division.”

On December 9th it’ll be a great fight,” Lomachenko said, before adding that he feels this fight could have enormous repercussions on boxing history.

“I will try and show my best boxing and my best skill, this fight is (historically) so important. Rigondeaux is a top guy and one of the top pound-for-pound. For me, it’s a big challenge!”

“I am excited about Vasiliy stepping back in the ring before the year is over.  It is a great fight for all boxing lovers and the fans from around the world who asked for it,” Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s manager commented.

“It is a historic bout for boxing where for the first time, two boxers, two world champions, each holding two Olympic Gold medals, will meet in the professional ring.  I am looking forward to seeing it.”
