Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar de la Hoya called once again for the rematch between his welterweight fighter Ryan Garcia and pound-for-pound caliber boxer Devin Haney.
“I like the rematch with Devin Haney,” he said live on DAZN during the Arnold Barboza vs Kenneth Sims fight card which took place Saturday, May 14 at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
What Oscar de la Hoya Said About Ryan Garcia vs Devin Haney 2
“There’s a lot of talk and chatter, right now. I think Devin Haney does deserve the rematch, because he’s been talking a lot and his past performance was really good. What Ryan did in his last fight with Barrios, obviously a world champion, he’s back — better than ever, mentally and physically. I’d love to see that rematch; Haney vs Ryan Garcia. It makes all the sense in the world. Let’s make this fight happen.”
What Happened in The First Haney vs Garcia Fight
Garcia shocked Haney in April 2024, dropping the previously unbeaten champion three times and winning a majority decision in Brooklyn.
The fight itself was chaotic — even for boxing. Garcia missed weight by 3.5 pounds and was ineligible to win Haney’s title. Weeks later, Garcia tested positive for the banned substance ostarine, prompting the New York State Athletic Commission to overturn Garcia’s win to a no-contest, suspended him for one year, and ordered him to forfeit part of his purse.
Haney also filed a lawsuit alleging fraud and battery before later dropping it, leaving the rivalry unresolved — until now.
Garcia And Haney Would Enter The Rematch on a High
Garcia and Haney rebuilt momentum in different ways before circling a 2026 rematch. Garcia rebounded from suspension and a 2025 loss to Rolando Romero by defeating Mario Barrios to win the WBC welterweight title, in style, in February 2026.
Haney steadied his career with wins over Jose Ramirez and Brian Norman Jr., the latter earning him the WBO welterweight title.
