Eddy Reynoso, the long-time trainer-manager of boxing superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, told Ring Magazine recently where the fighter’s imminent future lies.
The 35-year-old hasn’t fought since his conclusive defeat to Terence Crawford at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, home of the NFL franchise Raiders. Previously, aside from a light heavyweight blip, the Mexican legend was unbeaten since dropping his maiden loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2013.
And so, after relinquishing all his super middleweight titles to ‘Bud’, who has since retired, there has always been speculation as to where Canelo goes from here — both in terms of division, and opposition targeted.
“We’re going to stay at super middleweight for now,” Reynoso said.
“The division is heating up, and we can really stay busy there for the foreseeable future.”

There are a number of considerable fighters in the division, with fresh talent emerging.
There’s Hamzah Sheeraz, Osleys Iglesias, and Diego Pacheco. Christian Mbili, too. Together with established names like Jermall Charlo.
One frequently linked to Canelo is Mbili, which Reynoso tagged as “a really great fight, if it ends up happening.”
Undefeated with 30 pro bouts to his name, French fighter Mbili has beaten Sergiy Derevyanchenko and split a draw with Lester Martinez — a fight Reynoso suggested he and Canelo watched with interest. “We saw the great fight Mbilli had with Lester Martinez, and it would be a great challenge for Canelo.”
But there are other fighters they covet.
“And if Crawford returns, let’s make the rematch happen,” he said.
“As a trainer, I can see the modifications that we need to make for the Crawford rematch and for the results to go our way.”
