David Morrell Moves On: Faces Zak Chelli May 9 Following Smith Withdrawal

David Morrell isn’t waiting around any longer. After months tied up in a stalled WBO process and the collapse of his scheduled fight with Callum Smith, the Cuban has secured his return to the ring with a practical move: he will face Zak Chelli on May 9 in Manchester in a scheduled 10 round bout.

The development, first reported by veteran journalist Dan Rafael, places Morrell on a Queensberry Promotions card headlined by Fabio Wardley vs. Daniel Dubois, ensuring strong visibility in a demanding market.

The shift comes after a frustrating stretch. Morrell had been ordered last July to face Smith for the WBO interim light heavyweight title, but negotiations dragged without resolution. The situation worsened when Smith withdrew from the planned April 18 date due to injury, leaving the fight canceled with no rescheduled date in sight.

Rather than remain inactive, Morrell chose to stay busy. The decision is straightforward: maintain momentum and avoid being sidelined in a fast-moving division.

Chelli presents a different kind of test. Fighting on home soil, the British contender brings familiarity with the setting and crowd support. For Morrell, it will mark his first appearance in the UK, adding another layer to the assignment.

From a strategic standpoint, the move is clear capitalize on a completed training camp, preserve visibility, and remain active while his position at 175 pounds is recalibrated.

Morrell didn’t find continuity through the interim title route, but he did secure a timely alternative. On May 9, he will have the opportunity to turn a setback into forward progress.
