Skye Nicolson Outpoints Mariah Turner for WBC Interim Title in Melbourne

Australia’s Skye Nicolson has successfully continued on the path to claiming a second world title with a lopsided unanimous decision victory over Mariah Turner today at the Melbourne Pavilion in the suburb of Flemington.

Nicolson (16-1, 3 KOs) defended her WBC interim super bantamweight title with the following scorecards: 100-89, 100-89 and 100-89.

Turner (12-2, 6 KOs) was well below the level of competing with the southpaw the entire ten rounds. Turner was deducted a point in the tenth round for the use of her head. The Queenslander, by way of South Auckland in New Zealand, was nearly stopped in the sixth. Nicolson landed a straight left hand to send Turner stumbling into the corner, but held on well to see another round.

Nicolson continues in pole position for a chance to face undisputed champion Ellie Scotney.

“I want superfights, I want undisputed, I was born for the big stage” Nicolson said in the ring following her victory. “Ellie Scotney, I’m next in line, let’s make it happen. I know you’ve been at 122 for a long time, but come on, have one more fight.”

On the undercard Andrew Hunt recorded a first career defeat against Benjamin Hussain for the vacant IBF intercontinental super welterweight title. Hussain (14-2, 8 KOs) was knocked down in the third round, but fought back to claim the split-decision victory. Hunt (11-1-1, 6 KOs) saw one scorecard go in his favor at 95-94, while the other two judges both scored 95-94 to Hussain.

Lightweight Jack Wyllie produced an early second round stoppage against Miles Zalewski. Wyllie (19-2-1, 17 KOs) is now four fights unbeaten since his loss to George Kambosos Jr last March.

Also on the undercard promising Australian heavyweight Teremoana Teremoana continued the immaculate start to his professional career. Teremoana (11-0, 11 KOs) needed less than a round to dispatch the experienced Bowie Tupou (29-8, 20 KOs).

The event promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing began a new era for the company in Australia. The event started a broadcast deal with Kayo SPORTS and Fox Sports Australia in the country. The show was still broadcast on DAZN in all other regions.
