Lou DiBella hails David Benavidez as boxing’s “boogeyman” but shuts down Usyk talk

Lou DiBella has delivered a strong endorsement of David Benavidez, labeling him one of the most dangerous and exciting fighters in boxing today. However, he quickly dismissed any idea of Benavidez jumping up to face Oleksandr Usyk.

On May 2, Benavidez squared off against Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez for WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles at T-Mobile Arena.

For this bout, Benavidez moved up 25 pounds in the weight division, and many questioned the move. However, he put on an absolutely dominating performance and knocked out Ramirez in the sixth round to secure the victory.

With the win, he became the first to hold the titles at 168, 175, and 200 pounds.

His statement win has sent waves through the boxing world, and he is receiving a lot of praise for his performance.

DiBella also joined in praising the newly crowned champion. He did not hold back in his assessment of ‘The Monster. ‘ He described him as the number one must-see entertainer, highlighting a rare blend of attributes that separate him from the rest.

DiBella praises Benavidez following victory over Ramirez

According to DiBella, Benavidez combines power, speed, and underrated technical ability with a level of aggression that makes him a constant threat in the ring. He emphasized that this mix of skill and intensity is rare in modern boxing.

He also pointed out that Benavidez fears no opponent across multiple weight ranges, suggesting he would take on anyone from 175 to 200 pounds. That willingness to fight the best, combined with his fan-friendly style, has elevated his reputation.

DiBella went a step further and referenced past praise from veteran talent evaluator Sampson Lewkowicz, noting that Benavidez has now grown into what was once predicted of him,  a true “boogeyman” of the sport.

“Benavidez is the number 1 must-see entertainer in #boxing today. Combines power, speed, and underrated technical superiority with the kind of in-ring ferocity and mean streak that doesn’t come along often. Will beat anyone who will take him 175-200

Fears none of them, and, unlike many of today’s champions, he is worth the price of admission. He is now what Sampson (an all-time great evaluator of boxing talent) told me years ago that he would be … the real boogeyman,” DiBella wrote on X.

DiBella dismisses chance of Benavidez vs Usyk

While the praise for Benavidez was strong, DiBella drew a clear line when it came to a potential heavyweight leap.

In response to a fan asking whether Benavidez could fight Oleksandr Usyk, DiBella gave a blunt one-word reply: “no.”

The response shuts down speculation about a crossover fight at heavyweight, at least for now, and keeps the focus on realistic matchups within Benavidez’s current range.

Meanwhile, Usyk is set to defend his WBC heavyweight title against Rico Verhoeven on May 23.
