Tyson Fury’s August 1st Return: Four Possible Opponents as Announcement Nears

Tyson Fury’s August 1st return continues to gather momentum, and an official announcement is now expected this week.

The former heavyweight champion recently hinted at the comeback himself. He posted training footage from Thailand alongside the caption: “Let’s go August 1, Dublin, Ireland.”

As a result, Fury appears ready to step back into the ring despite going 12 rounds with Arslenbak Makhmudov back in April.

The proposed return would arrive just one week after Anthony Joshua is expected to make his own comeback in Riyadh.

Consequently, concern has already resurfaced that British boxing’s long-awaited heavyweight showdown could collapse again if either fighter loses their respective bout.

Queensberry promoter Frank Warren has already teased that Fury’s opponent will be a “good” heavyweight.

Tyson Fury return speculation has already intensified across the heavyweight division.

Typical Queensberry, the cards are being kept very close to the chest.

Tyson Fury Return Opponent Possibilities

However despite this, a few names stand out to me as genuine possibilities for Tyson Fury’s August 1st return.

Damian Knyba

One realistic option is the Polish heavyweight Damian Knyba.

Although Knyba was stopped by Agit Kabayel in his last outing, he still represents a credible opponent. At the same time, he avoids the immediate danger posed by the heavyweight elite.

Before the Kabayel defeat, Knyba had quietly built momentum and attracted attention because of his size and aggressive style.

Therefore, he could provide Fury with a manageable but respectable fight while keeping him active in the interim.

Jermaine Franklin

Jermaine Franklin also feels like a strong possibility.

The American is already familiar to British boxing fans following competitive fights against Fury’s former foe Dillian Whyte and long time rival Anthony Joshua.

Franklin was eventually stopped by rising contender Moses Itauma. Nevertheless, he remains durable, experienced, and willing to engage.

Stylistically, the matchup makes sense. In addition, Franklin could help Fury shake off further ring rust while still offering enough credibility to satisfy fans.

Tyson Fury Return and Left-Field Options

Solomon Dacres

Another name linked with the fight is former English heavyweight champion Solomon Dacres.

Dacres suffered a heavy stoppage defeat to David Adeleye earlier in his career. However, he has since rebuilt momentum by beating Vladyslav Rudenko at Wembley Stadium.

Furthermore, he had been scheduled to face Jared Anderson before the American withdrew through injury.

While the Adeleye loss damaged his momentum significantly, Dacres still brings a recognisable domestic profile. As a result, he would represent a relatively low-risk comeback opponent for Fury.

Left-Field Shout: Francis Ngannou II

Then there is the wildcard option, a rematch with Francis Ngannou.

Commercially, the fight still makes enormous sense because of the controversy surrounding their first meeting.

In that bout, Ngannou shocked the boxing world by dropping Fury and pushing him all the way in one of the most debated heavyweight performances in recent memory.

A rematch would attract huge crossover attention once again. Moreover, it could give Fury the opportunity to erase some of the narrative left behind from the first fight.

However, the matchup still feels extremely unlikely, especially as part of another show’s undercard…

And whether fans would actually want to see it is another conversation entirely.

For now, all attention remains on Queensberry and the expected announcement later this week.

Whoever Fury ends up facing, his latest ring return will once again keep him very much in the centre of the heavyweight conversation.
