Teofimo Lopez faces Jamaine Ortiz on Friday 9th February at 4AM (UK), Michelob Ultra Arena, Las Vegas, USA.
Preview
The brash, unpredictable and exciting Teofimo Lopez returns to the ring this Thursday night, defending the WBO world super-lightweight title he snatched from Scotland’s Josh Taylor last summer. Jamaine Ortiz is the man in the opposite corner, fighting for a world title for the first time in a career that has run 17-1-1 since turning pro in 2016. Ortiz has had his eyes set on Lopez for some time now – since losing to the “Technician” back in 2015 at the Golden Gloves – and will have his wish granted in a must-see fight under the lights of Las Vegas. The undercard features a cracking co-main event between Keyshawn Davis and Jose Pedraza in the lightweight division.
Teofimo Lopez (19-1, 13KO)
After toppling the great Vasyl Lomachenko against the odds in 2020, Teofimo Lopez had the boxing world at his feet. The “Takeover” had unified the division at 135-pounds and was on the verge of being the face of the sport for years to come. Then, he ran into a hungry George Kambosos Jr. in New York, dropped his maiden loss, and hasn’t looked the same since… That is until he challenged Josh Taylor for the WBO title up at 140-pounds last June. We saw flashes of the old Lopez in a lopsided unanimous decision, and the 26-year-old has plenty of miles left on the clock to build on this positive performance. Lopez made a name for himself for some flashy knockouts earlier on his career and will be looking to prove he still packs a punch up at super-lightweight.
Jamaine Ortiz (17-1-1, 8KO)
Much like his opponent this weekend, Jamaine Ortiz has just one loss on his record – but this to a man that Lopez beat in Vasyl Lomachenko. This 2022 loss was a big step up for the 27-year-old striker and arguably underlined his potential ceiling at the very highest level. A majority draw against Joseph Adorno is the only other blemish on the Massachusetts fighter’s record and at eight KOs in 17 wins isn’t known as a monster banger in the division. But Ortiz has had his eye on Lopez since the amateurs and comes to Las Vegas with the confidence in his ability and desire for revenge following a 2015 loss in the Golden Gloves.
Current Odds via BetFred
Teofimo Lopez is a huge 1/8 favourite with BetFred in this one, with Ortiz sitting as a modest 5/1 dog. The Method of Victory market sees the bookies siding with a Points Win for Lopez at 5/6, where as a 14th KO of the “Takeover’s” career weighs in at 7/4. Ortiz isn’t a puncher, so if you’re looking to back the outsider here, looking at a Points Decision for the “Technician” can be found at a juicy 8/1. BetFred think this one will be Going the Distance at 4/7.
Tip 1
Teofimo Lopez to win by KO, TKO or Disqualification at 7/4 with BetFred – If Lopez is over his hump and has adapted to life as a super-lightweight, then the power may follow. He’ll want to put on a show against a guy a few levels below him
Tip 2
Teofimo Lopez to win in Round 9 at 16/1 with BetFred – Ortiz will come to fight, but may start to feel the heat of Lopez’s puncher once he opens up trying to chase the scorecards.
