A press conference between Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn descended into chaos on February 25th when Eubank Jr slapped Benn with an egg. The incident has resulted in Eubank being hit with a £100,000 fine after the BBBC (British Boxing Board of Control) ruled that he was in breach of regulation 25.
The two are scheduled to fight at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 26th, with Eubank Jr the current bookmakers’ favourite at odds of around 8/11.
Online gambling analyst Margaret Doyle describes how boxing fans can find competitive odds not on Gamstop supported betting sites. Many of these options have less restrictions and offer a wide selection of markets including round betting, method of victory, and more.
The disruption to the press conference saw security having to intervene, with the animosity between the pair mirroring that of their fathers who famously fought in 1993.
While Nigel was next to his son Conor when the incident occurred, Chris Eubank Sr was not present. Eubank Jr has spoken about the breakdown of his relationship with his father, and that is due to come under intense scrutiny due to the parallels in his fight with Benn.
Chris Eubank Jr admitted that their relationship was strained as he attempted to move out from the shadow of his famous father and forge his own career path. However, it was the death of his 29-year-old brother Sebastian that led to a total breakdown in communication. He also spoke about his attempts to speak with his father, but said that Eubank Sr is still processing the death of his son.
There are still hopes that Eubank Sr will be ringside for the fight though, with such a historic moment for the boxing world, and a flashback to two of the best British boxers fighting it out in the 90s.
It remains to be seen whether Eubank Jr will appeal the heavy fine, but he seemed unperturbed by the result and was quick to post on social media that it was “worth every penny”.
His choice to hit Benn with an egg wasn’t just a childish notion though. The fighters were originally set to face each other in October 2022 at London’s O2 Arena. However, Benn failed a pre-fight drugs test that saw him suspended. He denied any wrongdoing and fought the findings, finally being cleared in November 2024 when it was discovered that the cause of the test failure was due to elevated egg consumption in the lead up to the fight.
Eubank Jr said that he chose to “contaminate” Benn with an egg because egg contamination was the reason for two failed drug tests.
In an era when boxing has to compete with MMA action and celebrity or influencer boxing events, stunts like this could be seen more frequently in the build up to fights in the future. It was possibly this fear that prompted the BBBC to come down on Eubank Jr so heavily with this fine.
