Boxing is back in the headlines following Ryan Garcia’s stunning upset victory against WBC champion Devin Haney in Brooklyn. The super lightweight title clash between the two Americans was front-page news for all the wrong reasons, primarily the challenger’s erratic behaviour in the build-up to the fight.
“King Ry” had been running rampant with conspiracy theories in the weeks prior to the bout while making wild sexual references throughout fight week.
He missed the 140-pound weight limit by three pounds as well as apparently drinking during his weigh-in. But that didn’t stop him from springing the upset, dropping his opponent three times in the process. Now he is the talk of the sporting world.
In the next six weeks, further stories will be told in the world of the sweet science. But none will be bigger than this upcoming heavyweight dust-up.
Fury vs Usyk
The heavyweight division has been without an undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis over two decades ago. Since him, the Klitschko brothers reigned supreme, before the belts were then claimed by the likes of Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr.
Now, they have found their way into the hands of Britain’s Tyson Fury and Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk, with the former holding the WBC strap and the latter holding the rest.
Ahead of their upcoming battle, the bookies have priced both fighters at odds of 10/11, showing just how much of a 50/50 the unification bout is. Popular betting platform Bet365 has a 5/5 star rating thanks to offers such as the current £30 free bet promotion, and placing that on either man would result in potential winnings of £27.30, not including the stake.
The two will clash on May 18th in Saudi Arabia for all the gold in the bid to become undisputed and both men head into the contest expectant of victory.
The Gypsy King holds two knockout victories over hard-hitting former champion Deontay Wilder, a shocking upset of Wladimir Klitschko and a knockout over contender Dillian Whyte. Usyk, meanwhile, secured two decision victories against Anthony Joshua to secure the majority of the heavyweight gold in addition to the undisputed cruiserweight crown he claimed back in 2018.
