After signing with Queensbury Promotions back in September, it always seemed like Gavin Gwynne was being lined up for a bout with either Sam Noakes or Mark Chamberlain.
Now it has been confirmed that it is the latter who will take on the Welshman, in a domestic clash on foreign soil, with the two set to tango on the Anthony Joshua vs. Francis Ngannou undercard in Riyadh on Friday night.
A 25-year-old southpaw, Mark Chamberlain (14-0) has displayed his punch power with ten knockout wins to date and perhaps more notably, six of those stoppages coming in the opening round.
The Portsmouth-born lightweight claimed the IBF European title eighteen months ago and has been actively defending, with three defences in 2023 which all ended with knockout wins.
As a result, ‘Thunder’ Chamberlain finds himself ranked as the #13 contender with the IBF and his exciting style saw him hand-picked by Turki Alalshikh himself to appear on the Joshua-Ngannou bill, with huge fights on the horizon.
Chamberlain faces newly-crowned EBU European lightweight champion, Gavin Gwynne (17-2-1), who had an intriguing 2023, beginning when he avenged an earlier draw with Craig Woodruff with a knockout win.
He then got the rub of the green against Emiliano Marsili in a bid for the EBU crown, after the Italian was forced to retire due to a shoulder injury whilst ahead on the cards.
Gwynne has a tendency to grow into fights, as shown when he was hurt in the second-round against Marsili, whilst Chamberlain is often a fast starter.
With just five stoppage wins to his name, including his opponent’s retirement in his last outing, Gwynne may not have the power to keep his fellow Brit off of him, and we anticipate the younger man to take advantage and get the statement win.
Prediction – Mark Chamberlain win in rounds 1-6
