Devin Haney continues to speak out about Ryan Garcia’s failed drug tests and it has now been revealed what action he wants taken against his former opponent.
Garcia has been in turmoil this week ever since the news was reported that he twice tested positive for a banned steroid, once before his fight with Haney on April 20, and once after.
Garcia won the fight on the night on points having impressed many onlookers against the odds and putting Haney down three times. He was ineligible to lift the WBC title however as he weighed in over weight.
Now, Eddie Hearn has been speaking to Fight Hub TV about the ongoing situation.
“I give him the benefit of the doubt in that it may have got into your system unknowingly but you still entered the ring with PEDs in your body. And that’s where Devin looks at it and thinks he was 3.5lbs over, and he had PEDs in his system and says guys, I don’t think this is fair.
Also, there was a situation with one of our fights recently, Joe Cusumano fought Adam Kownacki, he tested positive on the night, and I believe it’s only now come to a head. These things are going to take six months or beyond to get to the bottom of it. That ended up being a no-contest.”
Hearn then revealed what Haney wants to happen to the result of their fight now.
“Devin wants [Ryan] disqualified from the fight. I’ll be honest I don’t see how you can be given a win when you didn’t but, I dunno, it doesn’t really matter now, but certainly the no-contest thing, even if it’s found that there was contamination in his body, he still entered the ring with it in his system. So I think the no-contest thing is an absolute given.”
He then went on to speak what will happen for Garcia next.
“I dunno, it’s a tough one for Ryan because you have to go through this process now and that’s why he’s instructed lawyers, the B-sample as we know will come back the same unless there was contamination in the lab which can happen but is very, very unlikely.
“But when you’re coming out saying I was high going into the ring, I was smoking weed all day, I was drinking all week, you’ve got to be careful because at some point you have to present all the facts to the New York State Athletic Commission and they’re going to be the ones who rule on it.
“Sometimes boxers don’t realise I’m not going to make a decision on this, Golden Boy aren’t, DAZN aren’t, VADA aren’t, it will be the New York State Athletic Commission. They will get all the facts and then will make a decision based on all the facts and probably the decision will be a ban for six months or a year and a non-contest.”
Garcia still continues to claim his innocence as this one rolls on.
