Following the sad news of Willie Limond’s passing, former opponent Amir Khan has come out to pay tribute in a new video.
Limond passed away 10 days after the Scottish boxing icon was discovered in his car following a severe seizure. Renowned as one of Scotland’s most accomplished boxers, he initially pursued a career in football and made five league appearances for Albion Rovers during the 1998-99 season before transitioning to boxing.
Throughout his illustrious boxing career from 1999 until his final bout in 2023, Limond achieved remarkable success clinching titles such as the European Union, Commonwealth, and British championships.
Additionally, he secured the WBU World and IBO Inter-Continental lightweight titles, adding to his glittering career achievements.
His encounter with Mexican boxing legend Erik Morales in September 2010 remains a memorable highlight among his many notable battles, including with Khan. Khan paid his respects to Limond in a short post on X with the words ‘Rip Willie Limond.’
“Just a short video today about a former opponent who I faced back in 2007 for the Commonwealth title. It was my first title as a professional boxer and I boxed against a guy called Willie Limond. Now Willie was driving and had a seizure and went to hospital and later passed away.
“My thoughts go out to his family. If there is any way I can help or support please get in touch with me or the tea. It’s sad news for boxing, he was a great person, a great champion, we met several times after boxing each other, like I say my thoughts go to his family. Our prayers go out there for Willie, keep him in our prayers and rest in peace champ.”
Everyone at Boxing Social echoes those sentiments from Khan.
