Andre Ward has responded to speculation that he may return to the ring, after videos of the former pound for pound star training recently began to circulate on social media.
Ward has been out of action since his 2017 rematch with Sergey Kovalev, and has seamlessly transitioned to a punditry role and normally works on Top Rank shows in America.
And, despite telling Fight Hub TV that he’s “always got the itch,” ‘S.O.G.’ played down talks of potentially cutting his retirement short.
“I’m just working out, staying fit and keeping my body healthy. Just getting in there with the young life, move around a little bit – nothing crazy.”
“I’ve always got the itch, I’ll be a fighter for life!”
“But nah, I’m just chilling, I’m enjoying life.”
Ward won world titles at both super middleweight and light heavyweight, and is part of the minute list of fighters who retired undefeated, winning all 32 of his professional bouts.
As well as holding two wins over Kovalev, the Californian also boasts victories over the likes of Mikel Kessler, Arthur Abraham and a certain Carl Froch.
Ward has incessantly been linked to a fight with the current king at 168lbs, Mexican pay per view star and holder of all four major world titles, Canelo Alvarez.
Despite Ward’s age and time out of the ring, many pundits still view this as a tough night for Canelo – testament, as if any was needed, to the class of the now 38 year old.
However, it looks like the match up will remain in the bracket of cross generational fantasy fights, as opposed to one that fans are lucky enough to bear witness to in the ring.
