Andy Ruiz Jr has reacted to claims from Bob Arum that he could be in line for a shot at WBC world champion Tyson Fury, and appears to be more than up for the task.
The Top Rank boss stated that Fury vs Ruiz is a possibility for this summer, as ‘The Gypsy King’ looks for his next opponent after the collapse in negotiations for an undisputed clash with Oleksandr Usyk.Ruiz took to his official Instagram account to share a post with the quotes from Arum, and attached an image of the WBC Belt with a crown over it.
Last seen by fight fans in October when he outpointed Cuban veteran Luis Ortiz in Los Angeles, ‘The Destroyer’ originally seemed likely to take on former Fury foe Deontay Wilder in a final eliminator for the WBC world championship.
However, despite both men being signed to Al Haymon’s PBC, negotiations stalled for months and it now looks like a shot at the full world title is more likely for Ruiz.
If he does land a big money fight with Fury, it will of course not be is first crack at a world title with a Brit in the opposite corner.
Ruiz shocked the world when he stopped Anthony Joshua at Madison Square Garden back in 2019, before being outpointed by ‘AJ’ in a rematch later that year.
The affable Mexican American has only had two fights since then, and has not yet managed to replicate the career best performance that saw him crowned unified world champion.
He is the latest in a host of names to be linked to a fight with Fury following the breakdown of the undisputed fight, joining a list that includes the likes of Joe Joyce and even former UFC star Francis Ngannou.
