Andy Ruiz Jr boxed to a unanimous decision victory over Luis Ortiz, dropping him three times in the process.
Under the lights in Los Angeles, the two heavyweights exchanged power punches with most of the excitement coming in round 2 before some tentative middle rounds and, despite some good shots from Ortiz, a strong finish for the Mexican.
The fast hands and solid power of Ruiz put his opponent on the canvas twice in the second. Over the next few rounds, Ortiz landed some big shots but never really troubled the Mexican, rather just confirming his chin’s ability to absorb some damage.

The Cuban did enough to keep himself in the fight during the period that followed, Ruiz content with boxing smart and not taking too many risks. It wasn’t until the seventh that he sent Ortiz to the canvas again with a right hand to the top of the head. If Ortiz had issues with his balance after big shots, the same can’t be said for his recovery. He saw the final bell.

Post-fight, Ortiz smiled and responded to queries around his age and ability to continue competing in the division. He, backed by the fans, seems happy to keep going.
“For everybody who said that King Kong is old – well I gave you a war today. Boxing – there’s always a surprise but I felt I [put up] a great fight tonight.”
“You think I’m done? You saw a warrior tonight. What do the people want? Do they think King Kong is done?”
It was met by cheers as the Cuban was reunited with his family – his motivation in the sport.
As for Ruiz, there were many questions on motivation and weight before the fight. He answered them by staying patient, focused, and capable of going the distance against a dangerous force in ‘King Kong’. He told the fans that he wanted to stay active.
“Since the jump I thought everybody was doubting me that I was gonna’ get my ass knocked out and whatnot, but to tell you the truth, I worked so hard for this fight because I know he’s a warrior, he hits hard and I though I did a beautiful job boxing him around and I thought I showed some different class.”
“I do not want to be waiting so long until I fight. I want to fight at least three, four times a year. I’m ready man, I’m hungry, I want to be champion again and bring that belt back to Mexico.”
On his next fight, a match-up with Deontay Wilder was put to him. He, as he always has been, was open to it, assuming Wilder comes through his test against Robert Helenius on October 15.
“God willing he [Wilder] wins [against] Robert [Helenius] in October. You know me and him are in the same organisation. I want to thank Al Haymon – he can make this fight happen and let’s do it, let’s get it on.”
To cap off a nice Sunday night in boxing’s heavyweight division, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ entered the ring and confirmed – in third person – that he felt the same.
“Deontay Wilder’s back. He’s always looking for great, exciting fights, that’s what he loves to give the fans, so if that’s what’s lined up next, I’ve gotta’ handle business but after that we can get it on.”
