We are enjoying an amazing time in our sport at present.
Once more boxing provided us with a terrific fight and an epic occasion last Saturday, as local boy Josh Warrington tore the IBF World featherweight crown from Welshman Lee Selby.
20,000 Warrington fans in full voice – with a little help from local band The Kaiser Chiefs – pushed their man into the history books on what was a truly memorable night.
Sometimes in boxing, as in life, the stars align and it’s ‘just your night’: which it was for Warrington, who looked focused and inspired as he entered the ring to an amazing reception.
The highly-skilled Selby, who was the firm bookies favourite, was not afforded the same courtesy and received a very hostile welcome from the Leeds faithful but looked unmoved and confident.
Lifted by his loyal fans, ‘The Leeds Warrior’ started the better as he looked to march his man down behind a high guard and excellent defence.
It was obvious from the start that Team Warrington had left no stone unturned in their preparation. The challenger’s footwork, defence, and combinations were all relaxed – yet sharp – and he was first to the punch time and time again.
Things went from bad to worse for Selby who, while appearing a weight division bigger, was getting busted up with facial damage in the fiery exchanges which Warrington appeared to get the better of.
Selby, while always competitive, seemed to be battling against more than just his opponent, as the Yorkshire fans belted out songs and encouragement in full voice throughout the action.
The final bell brought massive celebrations from the Elland road fans, who were only silenced by the ludicrous split decision announcement. Which, thankfully, quickly lifted as the rightful winner and new featherweight champion’s name was announced.
An epic night and a fantastic performance from the boy from the Leeds council estate to become the city’s first World champion in boxing.
Well done, Josh Warrington.
