The scheduled September 9th fight between Callum smith and Anthony Dirrell for the vacant WBC world title has been cancelled due to smith decision to enter the world boxing super series.
Due to number one ranked smiths withdrawal the world boxing council have ordered a match up between Dirrell and undefeated Mexican American David “el bandera Roja” Benavidez.
Anthony Dirrell (30-1-1 ) lost the WBC Strap back in 2015 to Badou “the ripper “”Jack who’s move up in weight left the green belt up for grabs .
Since losing the belt in 2015 the Michigan fighter Dirrell has worked his way back into mandatory contention and was last seen comprehensively disposing of Norbert Nemesapati In January.
Relatively unknown Benevidez holds an outstanding record of (18-0 17kos).
The twenty year old from Phoenix turned professional at young age of sixteen and has since built a reputation as a top prospect in world boxing .
David Benavidez was last in the ring back on may 20th against seasoned Mexican and former James degale opponent “porky ” medina .
The far more experienced medina was expected to take Benavidez into untested water, which was far from the case.
Benavidez showed frightening power and speed through the contest throwing accurate combinations to both head and body,The uppercut was the damaging punch throughout .
The fight was over in the seventh round when Benavidez unleashed a brutal seven punch combination to which medina had no answer.
The original fight for the vacant belt between smith and Dirrell was due to take place on September 9th in Los Angeles but whether or not the fight will take place on the same date is yet to be seen .
If Benavidez can over come Dirrell he will become the youngest super middle weight world champion in boxing history.
