Ahead of Katie Taylor’s return to the UK where she went on to comfortably overcome Argentine Karen Elizabeth Carabajal on points, former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua spoke on the fight that he wants to see the Irish boxing legend take next.
Many fans are calling for Katie Taylor to have a rematch with Amanda Serrano following their legendary scrap back in April, and her home supporters in particular will be hoping the fight happens at Croke Park in Dublin.
However, ‘AJ’ told DAZN that he believes Taylor, who was recently named as the most marketable boxer in the world, should instead fight someone closer to home in the form of unified super-welterweight champion, Natasha Jonas.
“For me, personally, I would love to see a rematch with Tasha Jonas. She is an amazing talent Tasha, they had a great fight as well, it was in Eddie’s [Hearn] garden. To have it now, in front of thousands of people, that first fight, I was there, and I thought that was a real good dust up, really good fight.
Tasha caught her with some good shots as well, she came back, anyway I’m not a commentator, but I was really invested in the fight and they fought in the amateurs as well. So, even though they fought already, I think, for the UK, that would be a massive fight.”
A second fight between Taylor and Jonas would undoubtedly be be big – a battle between Ireland and England – but if the two are to cross paths once again, it may have to happen relatively soon.
Despite only recently winning her world titles, Jonas is now 38-years-old and, although her stock is currently higher than ever, ‘Miss GB’ is likely coming towards the end of a fantastic professional career.
Taylor is just two years younger, and although she rubbishes retirement talk, now seems the right time for a rematch between the two pioneers of the women’s game should fans want to see them competing at their peaks.
