Will either Anthony Joshua or Otto Wallin get a chance to average a loss with a rematch once they meet in December?
Many of the highest-level matchups in boxing these days have rematch clauses. They are designed to protect the biggest names in the sport and allow them the opportunity to win back any belts, ranking or kudos they might lose if they get beat on the night.
In recent years, Joshua has taken advantage of two such clauses following his 2019 loss to Andy Ruiz Jr at Madison Square Garden in New York, and then to Oleksandr Usyk at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in 2021. He was successful in the first rematch to win back his belts from Ruiz but failed to change the result of his loss to Usyk when the pair met a second time in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking to Seconds Out, Hearn was asked if there is a rematch clause on Joshua’s side for his upcoming fight with Otto Wallin on December 23.
“Yes.”
When asked why, he put it down to Joshua’s pulling power.
“Because it’s Anthony Joshua, the biggest star in the sport.”
Joshua will be hoping to put on a more emphatic performance against Wallin than his British rival Fury and knock him out inside the 12 rounds rather than going the distance like ‘The Gypsy King’ when he fought the Swedish southpaw back in 2019.
The pair already fought twice before, back in the amateurs, with Joshua winning both contests.
