Anthony Joshua’s trainer Ben Davison is busy preparing his fighter for the clash with boxing novice Francis Ngannou on May 8 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but that hasn’t stopped him naming the only man who could make a possible showdown with Tyson Fury happen.
Two-time world heavyweight champion Joshua appointed Davison as trainer ahead of his fifth-round stoppage victory over Otto Wallin back in December, after having most recently worked with American-based Derrick James.
Davison emerged on the boxing scene when he guided Tyson Fury back from his long absence, having five fights together, including the first of the eventual trilogy with Deontay Wilder.
Now, Fury’s former coach has given his verdict on how a potential matchup between Joshua and Fury could materialise whilst speaking to Full Circle.
“Can I give you the truth? I honestly don’t know. I really don’t know. If there’s one thing I will say, it’s that if it’s going to happen then Turki al Sheikh, his Excellency, is the person to do it.
“He’s delivering every single time. I know there are occasions where promoters say things, then eventually do it. With him, it’s about getting it done, and then talking about it.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if he has loads of things already signed off and done, and we just don’t know it. Unless he’s just that capable in being able to get it all done within 24 hours!
“Tyson’s situation is a bit unpredictable if he’s going to have a Usyk rematch, even an Ngannou rematch, but the fight with AJ is one fight fans want to see. It has been the fight they’ve wanted for years, let’s see.”
While Joshua prepares for Ngannou, lineal and WBC world heavyweight champion Fury will take on Oleksandr Usyk – who holds three of the belts – for the undisputed crown on May 18.
