Audley Harrison has revealed who he believes to be the number one heavyweight on the planet, and it will come as no surprise he has named a fellow Brit.
Despite a glittering amateur career that saw him win Olympic gold in Athens back in 2004, Harrison himself never really got going in the pro ranks, retiring with a record of 31-7 in 2013.
When asked by ESNews on who he believes stands atop the modern heavyweight division, Tyson Fury was the name that immediately jumped to Harrison’s lips.
“Right now, number one for me is Tyson Fury. Because, even though Usyk has got the belts, Deontay Wilder is a match for anybody and I think he’d beat Usyk.”
“So, the fact Tyson Fury beat him three times, for me puts him at number one. That’s how I see it, but the only way we’re going to resolve it is if they fight!”
In his last professional contest, Harrison fell victim to a first round knockout at the hands of Wilder, so there are few who know as well just what ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is capable of.
Fury has been out of action since his comfortable December stoppage win over old rival Dereck Chisora at Tottenham Hotspurs’ Stadium.
However, confirmation of ‘The Gypsy King’s next opponent is expected soon, with Andy Ruiz Jr the frontrunner to land a July date with the lineal champion.
Talks are also underway for Fury to face Usyk in Saudi Arabia this December, with Skills Challenge Group planning to stage the undisputed showdown on the same card as Deontay Wilder vs Anthony Joshua, in what would be a mammoth night for the sport.
