Tony Bellew’s quest for a world title fight seems to be taking steps forward, though nothing is certain. The Liverpudlian has made it clear that he wants to fight WBO heavyweight champion, Joseph Parker. However, there is also a lot of talk about Bellew fighting David Haye again possibly this December.
Nothing official has been announced but Parker’s promoter is interested in the idea of fighting Bellew. Mandatory challenger Hughie Fury is facing Parker next but if the champ retains his belt, ‘The Bomber’ could be next in line.
“As long as we got past [Hughie] Fury, Bellew is an attractive opponent for sure. If Joseph Parker were to beat Bellew, his stocks in the UK would go through the roof,” said David Higgins in an interview with Sky Sports.
It’s no secret that Parker is eyeing a fight against Anthony Joshua but Bellew is also heavily on his radar. However, everything is still ‘rhetoric’ according to the promoter but the conversation is ongoing.
“A Parker-Joshua fight could be something that happens at Wembley in the English summer next year, but that’s looking far ahead. Eddie Hearn is yet to put any sort of terms on the table for that particular fight. The same with Bellew, he hasn’t put any offer forward for that either. They have not put anything formal down, so it’s just rhetoric. There’s been exchanges about Bellew, in particular, and Joshua. There’s a dialogue,” confirmed Higgins.
Bellew himself has said that an announcement is on the way in the coming weeks.
