In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Ben Shalom, promoter of Ben Whittaker, revealed the anticipated date for the British boxer’s return to the ring. Whittaker, known for his skill and speed, suffered an accident in his last fight against Liam Cameron, which significantly impacted his physical condition and forced him into a temporary retirement.
The fight between Whittaker and Cameron, held on the undercard of the highly anticipated match between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, ended unexpectedly. Both boxers fell onto the ropes and slid out of the ring, a moment that surprised the spectators. The impact was particularly severe for Whittaker, who, after the accident, had to leave the ring in a wheelchair.
In the interview with Sky Sports, Shalom detailed the severity of the incident. According to the promoter, Whittaker suffered an ankle injury after falling out of the ring, though his primary concern at the time was that Whittaker hadn’t sustained a neck injury. Shalom noted he was confident Whittaker had badly hurt his ankle, but his main worry was for his neck, given a prior injury that had significantly impacted the boxer’s career.
Shalom explained that, in the fall, Whittaker bore the full weight of Cameron, who weighs 174.6 pounds and stands 6’2″. This detail worsened the impact of the fall, making the accident even more dangerous for Whittaker. Due to the extent of the injury, Shalom confirmed that the boxer will not fight again this year, though they are already planning his return for the early months of 2025.
Ben Whittaker could potentially face Liam Cameron in a rematch scheduled between February and March in Wolverhampton.
The promoter emphasized that the rematch with Cameron is the main fight on everyone’s mind. “We’ll not fight this year but are looking for a big homecoming in February or March against Liam Cameron potentially. That is the fight that is in the front of my mind and in the front of his mind,” Shalom declared. However, Shalom stressed the importance of Whittaker fully recovering his physical condition before returning to the ring.
Ben Whittaker’s manager, Lee Eaton, confirmed that he has recently been in talks with Liam Cameron’s attorney to schedule the rematch between the two.
Meanwhile, the British boxer has provided updates on his recovery through his social media. In a recent post, Whittaker informed his followers that he completed his latest session with the physical therapist and that his recovery is going as planned. This has given hope to his fans, who are eager to see him in action once again.
