Conor Benn is well and truly on the comeback trail and seeking a ‘big name’ to thrust him into superstardom, and now a new contender has emerged as a potential opponent for ‘The Destroyer’.
Benn has bounced back from an 18-month layoff with two decision victories in the United States, defeating both Rodoflo Orozco and Peter Dobson within the last six months.
With his ongoing dispute with the BBBofC making it tough to envision a return to British shores anytime soon, Eddie Hearn has made an offer to the self-proclaimed ‘face of boxing’, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, to face Benn in the States.
However, former super-lightweight and welterweight world champion Danny Garcia has now thrown his hat into the ring in an interview with YSM Sports Media, but declared that any such contest would need to take place at super-welterweight.
“He was supposed to fight at 160lbs with [Chris] Eubank [Jr] right? I would love to fight him at 154lbs, I think that makes great sense.
“He wants to fight a big name, Garcia versus Benn, there ain’t no bigger fight than Danny Garcia so I would love that fight. If the price is right, like Bob Barker, I’ll go anywhere [to fight Benn, including the United Kingdom].”
“I watched it [Benn vs Dobson], I think that he did good, the guy that he fought was gritty though. The guy that he fought wasn’t no [pushover], he had skills that dude, but definitely [I would fight Benn], I feel like that is a great fight for me stylistically and that’s a fight that I would love. At 154lbs, not 147lbs.”
Garcia is yet to fight since defeating Jose Benavidez Jr in July 2022, in what was his only bout since defeat to Errol Spence Jr way back in 2020.
