One of boxing’s most controversial figures Adrien Broner will make his return to the ring on August 20 against Omar Figueroa Jr at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.
The 32-year-old will be having just his second fight since January 2019 when Manny Pacquiao bested Broner in a defence of his WBA Welterweight title.
Since that loss, the multi-weight world champion has been in the news for the wrong reasons having broken the law on more than one occasion. With his career in danger of completely falling apart Broner gets another opportunity to remind people of what he can do in a boxing ring rather than outside of it.
In an official press release to announce the event Broner said:
“I’m going in there to try to stop Figueroa. I’m going to take the fight to him and go ahead and get him out of there.”
“What I expect from him is the same gruesome Figueroa that we always see. He’ll try to make it a rough fight.”
“Every fighter is different, but I don’t think he’ll be hard to hit. So, I’ll see ya’ll on August 20.”
Figueroa, a former WBC World Lightweight champion, said:
“I’m excited to move on to the next phase of my life and career, especially now that my mental health is at the forefront of everything I do.”
“Having a clear mind has been the best thing to happen to me. Now I’m able to focus 100% on my boxing career and I can’t wait to be back in the ring on August 20.”
Also on the August 20 card is the vacant WBA World Super Lightweight title fight between Alberto Puello and Batyr Akhmedov. While Roger Gutierrez will defend his WBA World Super Featherweight title against Hector Garcia.
