Caleb Plant is more qualified than most when it comes to breaking down Saul Canelo Alvarez vs David Benavidez and now he has now compared the power of both men.
Plant’s most recent outing was against David Benavidez in March when he lost a unanimous points decision. It was only the second loss of his 22-fight career, the other coming via an 11th-round knockout to ‘Canelo’ in November 2021.
With Canelo having brushed aside the challenge of Jermell Charlo last time out, many would now like to see him defend all four of his super middleweight titles against Benavidez next time out, though Benavidez must first get past Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade in November.
Speaking on the Last Stand Podcast, Plant was asked who he would favour in a fight between Canelo and Benavidez.
“I mean they got two different styles, styles make fights and it’d be interesting to see.”
Plant then broke down the fight and claimed Canelo has more punching power but ultimately found it hard to pick a winner.
“I think Canelo, he got more pop, I’m not saying David doesn’t, but Canelo got more pop.
David’s a bigger guy, he puts more punches together, but you’d really just have to let the bell ring and let those guys up and see how the fight went. They’re both really good fighters so who knows but I’d be excited to see that.”
Benavidez himself is the youngest ever two-time super-middleweight champion having held the WBC title after beating Ronald Gavril via split-decision back in 2017, then taking the same title off Anthony Dirrell in 2019 having been stripped for testing positive for cocaine.
