Callum Smith is the winner of the World Boxing Super Series tournament, with a sensational stoppage of George Groves.
In a stunning performance, the Saint was ruthlessly pummelled into submission with an onslaught of punches, after a left hook to the head sent Groves reeling in the seventh round.
Smelling blood, Smith subsequently pounced on the hurt champion, lethally finishing his man with an excruciating shot to the midsection.
The early rounds were largely characterised by tense jab exchanges as Groves was consistently forced to give ground to the bigger and stronger Liverpudlian.
Despite conceding significant height and reach advantages to his opponent, Groves enjoyed sporadic success with his own left jab at points in the fight. Nevertheless, after being visibly hurt in the third round, Groves appeared somewhat reluctant to exchange.
Meanwhile, Mundo’s pressure paid dividends in the seconds when he connected cleanly with a thunderous left hook, as Groves succumbed to a barrage of brutal punches.
With the win, Smith extends his undefeated record to 25-0 with 18 knockouts, capturing Groves’ WBA title, the vacant Ring magazine championship.
Ultimately, as winner of the tournament, Smith will also be taking home the Muhammad Ali trophy, which was presented to him by the late legend’s daughter Rasheda.
