Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is still yet to reveal his opponent for his annual Cinco De Mayo outing, although that hasn’t stopped his team clashing with David Benavidez’s representatives over the potential fight.
Following the initial announcement of the fight, many fans felt disappointed at the prospect of a bout with Jermall Charlo, who was heavily linked to be in the opposing corner.
However, the WBC middleweight champion has since appeared to rule himself out of the contest, claiming that no talks have taken place.
Now, optimists are hoping that Alvarez will challenge either David Benavidez or Jaime Munguia, yet Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz declared that the champion and his team had turned down a $55 million offer to fight his man.
“David Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz has declared that Al Haymon’s PBC have now offered Canelo Alvarez a guaranteed purse of $55million to fight Benavidez next, who will be moving up to light-heavyweight to fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk instead if he turns it down.”
In response, Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso has addressed the claim and denied its truth in an interview with ESPN, stating that no offer had been made for the 33-year-old to defend his belts against Benavidez, who is seen by many to be the bogeyman of the division.
“The reality is that none of the big promoters, not Al Haymon of PBC, not Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, not Bob Arum of Top Rank and not Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions has given me an offer to fight Benavidez.”
News as to who Canelo will fight is expected within the coming weeks, although it seems that even he may not yet know of the challenger’s identity, as PBC demands a showdown with Munguia.
