Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has long been linked with a fight with David Benavidez but has now hit back at the talk and claimed that ‘he has nothing to offer.’
Negotiations for Alvarez’s latest fight were rather protracted and played out quite publicly due to a dispute over purses and opponents.
It is thought that he was initially offered a fight with Jaime Munguia on the grounds that he would then fight the towing super middleweight and former champion Benavidez in September.
Though never confirmed, rumours suggested Canelo wasn’t keen on that deal so initially wanted out of his partnership with PBC.
What transpired is that Canelo has indeed signed to fight Munguia on his traditional Cinco De Mayo date, and as good a match as that will be between two men who share common opponents in Liam Smith and John Ryder, many people still want Canelo vs. Benavidez.
Speaking to FightHub TV, Canelo has dismissed the rumours that he was ever offered $55 million to fight him.
“No, nothing is true. Never. Not that I know, and I know everything. If he offered that amount, that amount I can make [fighting] anybody.”
He was then asked if it was the biggest fight out there.
“Maybe, who knows. But he brings nothing to the table for me. He brings just 25 lbs more in the fight on the night. He brings nothing in money, I am the one. This fight with Jaime Mungia is more important that other fights.
“You guys remember this happened with Golovkin, then Caleb Planet, Callum Smith, and Billy Joe Saunders. This always happens. I don’t need to prove anything to anybody in my career anymore.”
