Canelo Alvarez And Oscar De La Hoya Send Legal Threats As Feud Turns Ugly

The long running feud between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya just got a whole lot more ugly as legal threats are now being sent by both parties.

Years of simmering tension, fuelled by a bitter lawsuit, accusations of financial grievances, and a highly publicised separation between two former champions reached a boiling point on Wednesday.

De La Hoya ignited a fiery exchange with Alvarez during an exceptionally intense news conference in which De La Hoya said he would never make up with Canelo having gone in depth about their relationship over the last decade, per Boxing Scene.

“I’m one to always bury a hatchet, but that ship has sailed. If there’s one person in the world that I will not bury the hatchet with, it’s probably him.”

Speaking to Boxing Social, Canelo was asked why De La Hoya had suddenly started talking about him again, and specifically why he brought up Canelo’s failed drug test from a few years ago.

“I don’t expect anything less than that with that kind of person. He’s an asshole. I don’t know, because he is mad because I leave Golden Boy. I’m the diamond in Golden Boy, Golden Boy is not the same without me, that’s why he’s angry.”

He was then asked about why De La Hoya was accusing him of defaming him.

“I’m not defaming him. I have proof, I put try lawyers in, and he tried to steal money. I have proof. I don’t want that fight. I don’t really give a shit about Oscar, but if he says something in my territory I need to say something, right?”

He was asked what he said when he pressed himself up against De La Hoya and smiled a wry smile when he answered.

“I don’t remember, I don’t know, I was so angry.”

Finally, he was asked what he still had left to achieve and to prove in the ring.

“I wanna still make history with these kind of fights.”

Next up for 33-year-old four-division champion and former pound-for-pound king Alvarez is to defend all four of his super middleweight titles against 27-yeard-old Jamie Munguia this weekend in Las Vegas.
