There is plenty of clamour for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez to face David Benavidez and now a potential plan for that fight has been revealed.
A lot of stories have emerged around this potential match-up between the undisputed super middleweight champion ‘Canelo’ and former champion Benavidez.
Speaking at the press conference to announce his next fight, Alvarez said he has no interest in fighting his super-middleweight rival because he brings nothing to the table and would only be interested with a huge financial offer.
In a new interview with ProBox TV, Chris Algieri thinks maybe Canelo is ‘planting the seed’ for the fight to happen later in the year.
“Potentially Canelo is putting his mastermind hat on and planting that seed for that Saudi money. When I first heard that $150-200 million I thought this guy doesn’t want this fight, but then I thought wait, we’re in a different era now.
“These dollar amounts can actually be made cause we’ve an outlet putting on fights that could never happen before. So potentially Canelo is thinking ahead, putting his mastermind cap on and thinking listen if a promoter came up with that 150-200 million we could make that fight happen.”
Right now Canelo is focused on his next fight on May 4th with Jaime Munguia. Should he come through that tough defence against an opponent who knocked out John Ryder, a man he could only beat on points when they fought, then maybe Benavidez could be next.
