The public fallout between Canelo Alvarez and Ryan Garcia shows no signs of stopping.
Each fighter has taken shots at one another ever since last year when the Mexican criticised the youngster for ‘wasting his talent’ and questioned his dedication. Canelo described it as ‘constructive criticism’. That was then.
The one-time friends who used to train in the same gym are now further apart than ever. And Garcia’s prediction that Gennadiy Golovkin will beat Alvarez in their trilogy fight on September 17 has prompted the Undisputed Super Middleweight champion to once again fire back.
Canelo said during a guest appearance on The DAZN Boxing Show:
“He’s a little kid.”
“My advice for him is to do your job, focus on your career, win a world championship first, then talk about other people.”
“Because you’ve accomplished nothing, and you start talking about fighters who’ve accomplished a lot. When I was 20-year-old I was a world champion.”
The 31-year-old wasn’t done there and brought up something from the past making their feud even more personal.
“He needs to remember how much Eddy [Reynoso] did for him. A lot of things,”
“He and his father still owe money to Eddy and Eddy doesn’t say anything because he doesn’t need it.”
“It’s not fair he’s talking s*** about everything in the camp. He came to my gym, and we showed him love and supported him and he goes and says anything.”
“He’s not grateful. When a person is ungrateful, it’s the worst thing.”
For now, Garcia appears to have had the final word after an interview with Elle Seckbach for ES News:
“I just gave my opinion that GGG can win this fight,” he said defending his decision to pick against Canelo.”
“I just felt like he would have the performance of his lifetime. I feel like Canelo’s not in a good place. I don’t think I should be bashed for speaking my opinion.”
‘KingRy’ said Canelo took it personal and described the comments in return as ‘comical’ picking out one in particular.
“’At 20 I was a world champion’, which may have been true, but everybody’s journey is different. He fought [for] a vacant title with Matthew Hatton. That’s just the truth.”
“I have a lot of good people in my division. I can’t pick a Matthew Hatton and become a champion. I have to fight great fighters. It is what it is. I don’t mind that he fought Matthew Hatton, I’m just saying when I get my first chance it’ll most likely be against Gervonta Davis.”
