Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has warned Mike Tyson that his prediction for a David Benavidez fight is wishful thinking.
Tyson has made no secret about his love for Benavidez, giving him the name ‘The Mexican Monster’ and even admitting that he would be scared to get in the ring with him if he was fighting in the same era.
Benavidez is a two-time super middleweight champion currently without a belt in the rare position of still being undefeated. He lost his title once for a ban and the second time for missing weight, but he’s looking to go undisputed this time around.
Many fans feel he’s Canelo’s toughest test at super middleweight, and have been calling for a fight for some time now. That includes ‘Iron’ Mike, who picked Benavidez to win should the bout take place.
Canelo, speaking to Seconds Out, was unsurprisingly adamant that the heavyweight legend was wrong.
“They wish. They wish. It’s not that easy. I’m still here.”
The undisputed champion has long been considered one of the biggest stars in the sport, and has cemented that with titles in four weight classes.
A lacklustre 2022 that kicked off with a loss to Dmitry Bivol up at light heavyweight has led many in the sport to believe that Alvarez is ripe for the picking, and Benavidez’ recent win against Caleb Plant has put him in prime position for his shot.
Whether or not Canelo gives him it anytime soon is another story. Should he get by mandatory challenger, John Ryder, this weekend, he’s looking at Bivol to run it back.
