Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has long been at the top of many pound-for-pound lists, even despite a fight to forget against Dmitry Bivol. But who does he consider his company?
The Mexican superstar is currently undisputed in the super middleweight ranks, and is gearing up for a big 2023 following hand surgery to close off last year. Bivol is in his sights in the hopes of avenging that second career defeat, but nobody involved can quite decide what weight it should be fought at.
Despite that, Canelo’s achievements in the sport are undeniable, and he backs himself to be the best in the world. He was asked by ES News who he considered next up in the pound for pound rankings, and he named the current WBC Heavyweight champion, before giving a mention to his upcoming opponent, too.
“A lot of good boxers out there. I think Tyson Fury deserves to be in there, [and] Usyk I think.”
Again, not many can doubt what Tyson Fury has done in his professional career. A two-time heavyweight champion, the undefeated man from Morecambe is on the verge of making history by becoming the first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis.
Of course, the man who stands in his way is Oleksandr Usyk, and a victory for him would be all the more impressive considering the size of Fury and the fact that he was an undisputed cruiserweight champion just 4 fights ago.
As Canelo plans his ring return with a potential UK visit in May against John Ryder, Fury and Usyk are finalising their historic bout that will, according to promoter Frank Warren, take place on April 29.
