Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has voiced his opinion on the recent Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia fight and how it ended.
Two young superstars of the sport putting their unbeaten records on the line is a rarity in boxing and something both men rightly received a lot of praise for. So big was the event that many said its victor would become ‘the face of boxing’ – something Canelo might dispute.
In the end, it wasn’t too competitive. The fight ended up going the way many predicted, with Garcia starting fast but Davis eventually landing his power shots to end the show.
‘King Ryan’ over committed in the second round and got countered with a perfectly timed lead hand from ‘Tank’. From that moment on, Garcia seemed hesitant to let his hands go and Davis controlled the rounds, catching his opponent at will.
Just as Garcia looked to be regaining some confidence he got hit with a subtle body shot which, after a short delay, forced him to take a knee – the rest is history.
Pundits and fellow boxers have since weighed in on whether Garcia could have got back to his feet, and Canelo clearly feels the 24 year-old should have.
Speaking to FightHype TV, Canelo said:
“It was a good fight, I thought it was going to be a little more action, but Gervonta is too good.
Body shots hurt a lot, but you know we are fighters we need to get up.”
Post fight it came to light that Garcia had been hurt to the body in sparring and told his coach, Joe Goossen, in the ring immediately after the stoppage that an existing rib injury was the reason he decided to stay down.
Garcia will now move up to 140lb and has parted ways with Goossen. Davis on the other hand is now potentially the hottest property in boxing and won’t be short of offers for huge money fights.
