Undisputed super-middleweight champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, has questioned the résumé of Terence Crawford, whom many now consider to be the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
Crawford dominated and stopped his biggest rival, Errol Spence Jr, in the ninth-round of their long-awaited showdown to claim the undisputed welterweight crown.
As a result, many fans are discussing him as the potential fighter of the generation.
However, to further cement his legacy, the Omaha native has sensationally revealed he wants to jump up three weight divisions to face Canelo and become a three-division undisputed champion – and there are a number of pundits and fighters who believe that he is capable of defeating the former pound-for-pound number one.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Canelo said that, although he respects Crawford, his record perhaps is not as impressive as it is perceived to be.
“Like I always said, I respect Crawford. He’s a very talented fighter, but he has just won one big fight.
If you see his record, he’s just beaten one good fighter. Other than that, I don’t think that he has beaten other great fighters like Spence.”
Crawford is 40 fights undefeated in his pro career, with 31 early finishes. After winning a world title at lightweight and all four belts at 140lbs, he moved to welterweight to beat the likes of Amir Khan, Shawn Porter and Kell Brook on his way to the Spence bout.
Before the much-loved Mexican can even consider facing ‘Bud’, he must first make a third defence of his four 168lbs belts against Jermell Charlo, who he fights on September 30 in Las Vegas.
The bout represents a chance for Canelo to silence any doubters that believe he may be on the decline following three consecutively underwhelming performances against Dmitry Bivol, Gennadiy Golovkin and John Ryder.
