# Canelo open to Golovkin trilogy

WBA Super and WBC super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez remains receptive to a third fight with old nemesis Gennadiy Golovkin.

Having already engaged in 24 intense rounds against the Kazakh puncher at middleweight, there is still a sense of unfinished business between the bitter rivals though Canelo insists ‘GGG’ must follow him to 168lbs for the bout to become a reality.

In 2017, Canelo and Golovkin shared a hotly-disputed draw, with the Mexican claiming a keenly-fought majority decision the following year. Golovkin and most fight fans have been crying out for a third instalment ever since. But Canelo, now a fully-fledged super-middleweight, will only entertain the trilogy if IBF middleweight champion Golovkin moves up in poundage.

“The truth is, I’m open for anything,” Canelo told ESPN.com. “Why wouldn’t he do it? \[move up to super-middleweight\].

“I’ve done a lot. I’ve fought a lot of good fighters, a lot of champions. I’ve beat him and I think that everything else will leave the legacy of my career \[not just Golovkin\].”

Attempting to unify the 168lbs division in 2021, Canelo faces WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on Saturday with a bout against IBF title-holder Caleb Plant mooted later in the year. A Golovkin trilogy fight would have to follow that schedule.
