Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has made his pick for Gervonta Davis versus Ryan Garcia, and believes it comes down to experience.
Canelo has praised Davis in the past, calling him one of his favourite current fighters to watch. On the other hand, he’s had a bit of beef with Garcia, who trained in his gym with Eddy Reynoso before moving on, claiming the coach didn’t have time for him.
Álvarez seemed to take that personally, and called Garcia ungrateful. Things seems to have been settled since then, and the undisputed super middleweight champion even praised Garcia when asked by TMZ Sports how the ‘Tank’ fight plays out.
Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, the elite Mexican doesn’t believe that will be enough on the night, stating that Davis’ experience should get the job done.
“I think Davis. He has more experience, but it’s gonna be a good fight … Look, Garcia is a good fighter, he has a lot of talent, but I think he needs more fights before the Gervonta fight.”
The bout has now been signed and officially announced for April 22 in Las Vegas – one week later than originally planned, but fans won’t mind as long as it goes ahead.
‘Tank’ had a fight with Hector Luis Garcia on January 7, winning by ninth round stoppage, whereas Garcia has been out of the ring since his 6th round knockout of Javier Fortuna in July 2022.
With other hurdles cleared and contract disputes ironed out, Two unbeaten young men in their prime with 45 knockouts between them certainly seems like it could be fight of the year, and the co-promotion will treating it as such in the hope to maximise its hype.
