Canelo Alvarez is reported to be taking on Jermall Charlo in an undisputed super-middleweight title fight on May 4 in Las Vegas.
The Cinco de Mayo weekend fight has been synonymous with Canelo for a number of years, and speculation was running wild with who the Mexican superstar would step into the ring with this time around.
There were a number of names linked for the showdown, including Terence Crawford, David Benavidez, and Jaime Munguia.
It looked like fans may get an answer on Tuesday when it was announced that Canelo would make a ‘major announcement’ on TV channel Azteca, but The Ring reported on Monday that it would be Jermall Charlo in the opposite corner in May.
Jermall will be looking to gain revenge in the bout, as his twin brother Jermell Charlo suffered a dominant unanimous decision defeat to Canelo back in September.
That victory saw Canelo make it three straight wins since his loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, also defeating Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder in recent times.
Jermall was last in action in November, claiming a one-sided points win over Jose Benavidez Jr, in what was the unbeaten star’s first fight in over two-and-a-half years.
The fight with Benavidez was the first time that Jermall had fought above the 160lb limit, having won the WBC middleweight title in 2019, defending it three times to date.
Official confirmation of the bout between Canelo and Jermall Charlo could come on Tuesday when Canelo makes his TV appearance.
