Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez is a superstar in the sporting world, and with that comes many people calling your name for a fight – often those that haven’t enjoyed anywhere near the same success.
Canelo has bonafide contenders like David Benavidez snapping at his heels, as well as a long list of potentially tough fights including his next against fellow-undisputed champion, Jermell Charlo.
He’s also often called out for crossover fights, and has been by MMA stars Kamaru Usman and Conor McGregor. He responded by saying he would beat the latter with one hand.
The latest to try and set up a fight is Jake Paul – a YouTuber-turned-boxer who has made a career out of being former UFC fighters.
He has been adamant that he has what it takes to beat Canelo with a few years more training, and mentioned the Mexican’s name at the post-fight presser of his Nate Diaz win.
Speaking to Mirror Fighting about the situation, Canelo smiled and said Paul needs to ‘calm down.’
“My level is another level. But look, I think he needs to enjoy what he’s doing and that’s it. He needs to calm down and start calling out people with other levels.
I think he needs to focus on what he’s doing – he’s going good things. Enjoy that.”
Many feel that Jake Paul still needs to prove himself in the sport against a legitimate boxer having lost his first outing against one in the form of Tommy Fury. There’s also a stark difference in size.
In the meantime, Canelo will defend his four super-middleweight belts against Charlo on September 30 in Las Vegas.
