Canelo Álvarez has been involved in some of the biggest boxing events in recent times and he’s only a couple of months away from what is being billed as the fight of the year.
On September 17 the Mexican defends his Undisputed Super Middleweight crown against his arch rival Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. For only the second time in his career he is going into the fight on the back of a loss, having been defeated by Dmitry Bivol when challenging for the WBA light heavyweight title in May.
Even though Eddie Hearn called Canelo-GGG 3 ’10 times bigger’, for many hardcore boxing fans an undisputed welterweight showdown between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford would undoubtedly be the fight of 2022. The matchup has been rumoured for some time but now looks closer than ever, with Showtime Sports President Stephen Espinoza ‘optimistic’ it can happen this year.
Canelo Álvarez Gives His Spence Jr-Crawford Pick
Whilst at a press event for his upcoming trilogy bout, Canelo was asked his opinion on the potential Spence-Crawford encounter:
“I think that’s a good fight. It’s going to be a really good fight.”
“Spence is a really good fighter, but I think Crawford [nods head].”
The interviewer then asked if he thought Crawford would stay southpaw for the bout?
“He can switch that. I think he’s better.”
Although having made his pick clear, the interview still asked if he would favour Spence for the win, Canelo’s response was emphatic:
“No, no, no, Crawford!”
