Saul Alvarez has indicated that he plans to go back up to light-heavyweight before the end of his career.
The IBF, WBA Super, WBC and WBO super-middleweight champion returns to the ring later this month in a trilogy clash against Gennadiy Golovkin.
Alvarez will take on the Kazakh on September 17 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
And after losing his last fight against WBA world light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol back in May, the 32-year-old steps back down to super-middleweight to defend his undisputed crown against the current IBO, IBF and WBA Super world middleweight champion.
Their third fight comes four years since ‘Canelo’ won a majority decision victory in the second fight – and the Mexican is planning on it being the last fight of the big puncher’s career.
Alvarez has revealed his plan to force the 40-year-old – whose only career defeat came against him – into retirement with a dominant win.
But after hopefully beating ‘GGG’ for the second time in three fights, ‘Canelo’ has revealed a desire to step back up in weight and fight for another title in the light-heavyweight division where he has previously been the WBO champion.
Speaking to Forbes, Alvarez said:
“I’m going to keep trying. I’m going to try one more time at 175 [pounds]. I’m going to try as many times as I can to be great.
“I already did a lot in boxing. I have a lot of history. I’m doing great right now.
“I want more. I’m not somebody who’s going to say, ‘Okay, I’m good. I’m going to stay in this position.’
“No, I’m the kind of guy who looks for more challenges.”
Golovkin, having been a career middleweight, steps up to super-middleweight for the first time and has flirted with the idea of retirement if he loses a second time to ‘The Cinnamon Kid’, who has been a world champion in multiple weight divisions.
