With the build up now over, one could tell from the atmosphere this week that there is unresolved business between two of the most iconic fighters of this generation.
Their first encounter was one marred with controversy. As the bell rang for the conclusion of the 12th round, many observers felt the announcement of ‘Triple G’ as the victor was a mere formality. However, the boxing world gasped as Michael Buffer announced the three Vegas judges ultimately scored the fight a draw – with Adelaide Byrd’s 10-2 scorecard in favour of Canelo raising eyebrows in particular.
The second fight was a much closer affair, with fans and pundits split down the middle as to who deserved the win. Canelo was given the nod that night, and a touch-paper was lit under Gennadiy Golovkin, who since that day has called a third dance with the Mexican.
With the Kazakh’s wish now granted and the trilogy now upon us, there is a feeling amongst many in the sport that Canelo – aided by father time – will conclusively get the better of the now 40-year-old GGG at the T Mobile on Saturday night.
However, with true animosity harboured by Golovkin as he looks to right what he sees as the wrongs of years gone by, count him out at your peril.
