Chepo Reynoso, the co-trainer and manager for Mexican superstar and Lineal World middleweight champion. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is very confident in his fighter’s chances ahead of his highly anticipated rematch date with Gennady Golovkin.
Boxing fans around the world are seeking clarity as to who exactly is the number one middleweight in the world following the hotly disputed draw verdict in their September clash.
Both combatants and their respective teams have each stood by their own assertions that they did enough to claim victory in that fight.
Canelo and Golovkin have since stood by the mantra since announcing their rematch, that this time they will not need the judges.
“Both were dissatisfied, felt they had won and that’s why everything was faster. They facilitated the process to get the rematch done,” says Chepo to Juan Manuel Vazquez.
Chepo shared his belief that Canelo will now be better prepared second time around. After seeing each other’s styles in their first meeting. Furthermore, Chepo believes his fighter will go into the fight now with the knowledge he can take his opponent’s power.
“That occasion allowed the two of them to get to know each other. Feel out each other’s punches and styles,” Chepo added.
“I think the one who got the most from that experience was Canelo. He showed that he can take Golovkin punches and proved that he is not invincible.”
“It will be the culmination of a trajectory that we started from when Canelo was a kid, knocking out the knockout artist. It will be the highest moment in that story we are writing.”
“I use the plural ‘we’ because I am part of that history, I helped formed him from the beginning and at least when he got the name, Canelo, which I put on him,” Chepo said.
