Former world champion turned pundit, Carl Frampton, has weighed in on what has the potential to be the biggest fight of boxing’s calendar year – Gervonta Davis versus Ryan Garcia.
‘Tank’ and ‘King’ Ryan have crossed promotional and broadcast barriers to make the 136lb catchweight contest happen, and the result is fans given the treat of a prime vs prime contest between two of the biggest stars in the sport.
Speaking to SecondsOut, Frampton broke down the fight and made his pick, which goes against the grain in terms of oddsmakers as well as many pundits and fans.
“I think Tank’s probably the favourite in the fight and probably rightfully so.
I have a feeling that if Garcia can stick to a game plan, which I imagine is going to be punch long and fast, don’t get caught in the middle distance, when Tank gets close hold him and then get back out, stay away from middle distance completely because he could get knocked out.
If he sticks to a strict rigid game plan he could win the fight, but Tank can turn your lights out at any point in the fight. I’m actually going to predict a Ryan Garcia points win.”
Many believe the fight will play out as Garcia’s speed against Davis’ power, although the opposite can be said for both, too.
Garcia, who’s been said to leave the pocket with his chin exposed, may do well to take Frampton’s advice, as the man in the other corner has one of the sport’s most impressive knockout ratios.
The action goes down on April 22 in Las Vegas, with US fans paying a premium price for a premium product on Showtime or DAZN PPV, whilst fans in the UK can tune in via their regular DAZN subscription.
