Former two-division world champion, Carl Frampton has made his prediction for how a clash between a prime Floyd Mayweather and a prime Terence Crawford would have played out, following on from ‘Bud’s career-best performance on Saturday night.
Crawford knocked out Errol Spence Jr in the ninth-round of their long-awaited showdown at the weekend, becoming the first undisputed four-belt champion in the history of the welterweight division. The performance has skyrocketed Crawford’s profile, with many fans believing him to be the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.
This has led to speculation online as to whether Saturday’s version of Crawford could have been the man to defeat Floyd Mayweather, who retired with a record of 50-0 and is deemed as the sport’s greatest talent since the turn of the millennium.
Like Crawford, Mayweather also ruled the 147lb weight-class, claiming a third world title against Manny Pacquiao in 2015 to further unify the division.
On the post-fight broadcast on TNT Sports, Frampton admitted that based off Crawford’s performance against Spence, he believes that the 35-year-old would have beaten Mayweather at his best.
“There’s a big statement that I want to make here. The fighter of our generation, everyone will probably agree, is Floyd Mayweather, I think that Terence Crawford is now the fighter of our generation. That performance beats Floyd Mayweather at his best, at welterweight, I genuinely believe that.”
As Frampton admits, it’s certainly a big statement, with the self proclaimed ‘The Best Ever’ known for his elusive counter-punching style to which there has never been a blueprint on how to beat.
